Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has officially launched a next-generation AI agent capable of executing trades and paying for premium research services. This move comes just days after competitor Robinhood introduced a similar tool, signaling an escalating AI integration race within the financial sector.

According to Coinbase, users can integrate the AI agent directly with their main account or choose to operate it in a separate sandbox environment. The tool can analyze charts via Coinbase Advanced to rebalance portfolios, follow pre-established investment theses, or provide short-term trading advice. Currently, Coinbase's AI agent supports spot and derivatives markets, with plans to expand to equities and prediction markets in the future. Notably, utilizing the x402 open payment protocol developed in collaboration with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near, the agent can pay for research data APIs without requiring manual login or subscriptions.
Bối cảnh
The launch of "Coinbase for Agents" is the culmination of years of investment by the exchange into AI technology. From launching the AgentKit development tool in 2024 to integrating an intelligent virtual assistant late last year, Coinbase has consistently paved the way for an autonomous agentic economy. Coinbase representatives shared that their long-term goal is to build a distinct platform for a future where most internet traffic will be accessed and operated by AI entities rather than humans.
