The chagee.vn domain dispute, which has been the focus of public and tech community attention for several weeks, has officially come to an end. Asset Vietnam recently released a detailed statement regarding the transfer of ownership, while also shedding light on the rigorous management processes of the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC).

Latest developments

As of May 15, 2026, the domain chagee.vn officially belongs to Asset SG (Asset Singapore), a member of the 5VN ecosystem. Previously, the former owner, Asset Vietnam, completed the legal procedure to return the domain to VNNIC's resource pool. Notably, the reallocation to Asset SG did not happen immediately but underwent a strict verification process.

VNNIC requested the Registrar to provide guidance and advise the registrant on the purpose of use, demanding a commitment to avoid causing confusion or counterfeiting any existing brand. Asset SG responded with a written commitment outlining its non-profit purpose for the "ChàGee" website—an interjection combining Vietnamese and English to express discovery.

Legal boundaries and digital sovereignty

The chagee.vn case is not just a typical domain dispute. It exposes the thin line between domain registration rights (based on the "first-come, first-served" principle) and trademark protection rights. Asset Vietnam asserted that the successful return and re-registration demonstrate that there was no valid dispute preventing the allocation process at that time.

Asset also emphasized that the website will maintain its current status: showcasing Vietnamese culture, people, and sovereignty, in strict compliance with the non-profit commitment signed with the regulatory authority.

Why it matters

This sets an important precedent for businesses concerning "brand defense" in the digital space. VNNIC's cautious approach in this matter signals a shift toward proactive management—not only relying on paperwork but also considering public opinion and actual dispute risks. For the tech community, this is a lesson in understanding the law to sustainably protect digital assets.
