The open-source revolution that once transformed the AI industry is officially spilling over into robotics, shifting the focus from hardware to 'thinking' models for robots.

Developments

After nearly two decades of dominance by ROS (Robot Operating System), tech giants like Hugging Face, Nvidia, and Alibaba are betting big on open-source robotics. Hugging Face launched LeRobot, where the number of robotics datasets has skyrocketed from over 1,000 to more than 58,000 in less than a year. Nvidia contributed the Cosmos ecosystem and GR00T, helping robots learn to reason and execute complex tasks. Even Alibaba recently announced RynnBrain, a foundation model for 'physical AI' with performance outstripping its competitors from Google.

Why It Matters

Open source is leveling the playing field in robotics. Now, a small group of developers in Vietnam can access world-class pre-trained models without needing a PhD or a million-dollar lab. However, experts also warn of commercial hurdles behind these projects and the risk of AI engineers 'forgetting' fundamental robotic mechanics when they rely too heavily on neural networks.
