Overcoming Immunotherapy Bottlenecks
Therapeutic cancer vaccines function by prompting the body's natural immune system to target malignant cells. Although they have demonstrated clear promise across multiple clinical trials—with a few therapies earning approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for specific cancer types—their real-world efficacy remains limited. In many patients, monotherapy vaccines fail to generate an immune response strong enough to completely eradicate tumors.
To overcome this hurdle, several research teams are adopting a novel strategy: co-administering vaccines with cytokines, signaling proteins responsible for amplifying the body's immune response. The goal of this combined regimen is to drive T cells to mount a more aggressive attack when exposed to cancer antigens.
