NVIDIA, the American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC), and creative agency Hello Monday have announced a partnership to develop "Signs" - a dedicated AI platform for teaching American Sign Language (ASL). This is seen as a practical technological effort to support the deaf community, at a time when AI tools supporting this language remain highly limited.

Background

According to an announcement from NVIDIA, ASL is currently the third most popular language in the US. However, the number of AI tools trained on ASL data is significantly lower than for other common languages like English or Spanish. This lack of accurate training data has created a major barrier to developing applications that help deaf individuals access modern learning technologies.

Developments

The "Signs" platform is designed to address this challenge by using AI technology to recognize and respond to users' sign gestures in real time. The project is expected to leverage NVIDIA's graphic processing and deep learning algorithm strengths to optimize body movement recognition, thereby providing accurate guidance for a more visual learning experience.

Why it matters

For the AI and tech community in Vietnam, this project serves as a real-world case study on how to apply computer vision to specialized social issues. While the current platform focuses only on American Sign Language, NVIDIA's method of collecting and training non-verbal datasets could pave the way for developing tools that support Vietnamese Sign Language (VSL) in the future.
